Dressmaker Form and Sewing

A dressmaker form is a form used by dressmakers for getting a proper fit. If you wish to do dressmaking at the most basic level, a dressmaker form may not be necessary but if you know how to use a dressmaker form and if you are already in the intermediate or expert level of dressmaking, then a dressmaking form is definitely helpful.

You could be a great dressmaker your entire life without using a dressmaker form. You can achieve this by simply having an understanding of how to measure your body and how those measurements correspond to the pattern that you are using. However, most people do not have the body measurements set by industry standards. Because of this reason, fitting a garment to the actual shape of your body will be extremely difficult unless you have more than two arms and hands.

Dressmaker forms have been with dressmakers since the time of ancient Egyptians. It is recorded that a dressmaker form was found in Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1922. The form had the shape of a human torso that was found near a clothing chest. Ever since then, the dressmaker form has evolved into different shapes and styles in France, England, Austria and other parts of the world.

A dressmaker form is manufactured by big businesses because it is in high demand by dressmakers and other enthusiasts. Dressmaker forms are tailored exactly to the measurements of real life models set as standards by clothing companies. Clothing companies use these standard models for setting the measurements of the clothing items that they are producing.

A dressmaker form can come in one of three types. There are adjustable dressmaker forms, non-adjustable dressmaker forms and home-made dressmaker forms. Adjustable dressmaker forms have dials along the bust, waist and hip areas for you to get your own custom fit. These forms can also be adjusted for height. These kinds of dress forms are pretty affordable but although they can be adjustable in crucial areas of measurements, these forms are not exactly you. A lot of dressmaker forms are almost perfect body forms by default.

Non-adjustable dressmaker forms can be of standard sizes like 10, 12, 8, or they can be custom made on the bust, waist and hips provided by the customer. Same as adjustable forms, non-adjustable dressmaker forms do not represent your exact size and shape.

Home-made dressmaker form is a dressmaker form that are a duplicate of customer’s body. This can be achieved by using inexpensive materials like duct tape, brown paper tape or a combination of both. To get the form done, you need someone else to help you though because it would be almost impossible to do it yourself.

Dressmaker Sewing Machine and Dressmaking Supplies

Dressmaker sewing machine is not the only thing that needs a lot of thought in dressmaking. There are other dressmaking supplies as well. A small sewing room is more than enough to hold all the necessary dressmaking supplies you need for basic dressmaking. Apart from a dressmaker sewing machine, a dressmaker needs to have a dressmaker’s form, a large table for cutting as well as pinning fabric, thread, tape measure, scissors, pins and needles and trims.

Two types of needles, one for a dressmaker sewing machine and one for hand sewing are also required. Extra needles for hand sewing are good to have in case the dressmaker sewing machine breaks down. Also, there are different types of needles. There are needles for tough denim fabric and there are also needles designed for loose stitching and dresses. Needle kits that have different kinds of needles also include upholstery repair needles and also those with a wide eye section to be used in sewing with yarn.

Pins are used to pin and hold pattern pieces to a fabric before cutting the fabric. Dressmakers’ pins come in various lengths. Two of the most commonly used are extra long and extra fine. Whatever the length is, you have to make sure that the pins you use are in good condition and you need to discard any pin that is blunt, rusty or damaged because pins that are of poor condition could damage fabric.

Tape measures come in three different sizes. There are 60”, 100” and 120” tape measures. A standard 60” tall tape measure is good enough unless you are exceptionally tall. The standard 60” measuring tape of a dressmaker is 5/8” wide which is the standard commercial pattern seam allowance.

Scissors for dressmaking can be categorized into three. There are paper scissors used for cutting out patterns and there are small sharp scissors for buttonholes and threads. Lastly, every dressmaker needs to have a pair of dressmaker’s shears or scissors. This pair must be used only for fabric and not for thread or paper. If you follow this rule and take care of the pair properly. With proper care a good quality pair of scissors will last a lifetime.

Other tools include a tailor’s chalk, a ruler and a pencil and an iron and ironing board. A tailor’s chalk is used for marking the fabric and a ruler and pencil is for pattern altering. An iron and ironing board is used for pressing while you sew and it is very much needed for great results. Make sure that you get an iron with a stainless steel plate since a stainless steel plate is easier to clean than other kinds of plates in case accidents happen while ironing.
